Everyone continues to be so supportive! The green light is on to develop a wellness program for teens in the communities around the hospital that is peer run. Ideally, we can involve young women to become leaders in their schools to go out and teach about nutrition, physical fitness, stress reduction, and so on. It has been well documented that if you educate women, who are usually the caregivers in their families and make decisions about food, medical care, etc., you can make a big impact in the health outcomes of those communities. On NPR, there was also discussion of why there are not many girls going into the sciences and the common denominator that was found was lack of female role models in the sciences. This program could really marry the two goals! Leadership + wellness education. Perfect.
